This document analyzes the accounting treatment of preliminary expenses incurred during company incorporation and costs associated with plant development.
Preliminary expenses, such as legal and registration fees, are necessary for setting up the company but do not create long-term assets or provide future economic benefits. As per Ind AS 38, these should be expensed in the period incurred.
In contrast, costs related to developing a plant, like legal, architectural, and permit fees, are capital expenditures directly contributing to a long-term asset. These should be capitalized under Ind AS 16 as part of Property, Plant, and Equipment (PPE).
