CCI imposes a monetary penalty of Rs. 1337.76 crore on Google for anti-competitive practices

The CCI has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs. 1337.76 crores on Google for allegedly abusing its dominant position in multiple markets in the Android mobile device ecosystem and violating Section 4 of the Competition Act. Google has been given 30 days to provide the requisite financial details and supporting documents. The CCI allegedly abused its dominant position in five markets –
(a) Market for a licensable operating system (OS) for smart mobile devices in India
(b) Market for an app store for Android smart mobile OS in India
(c) Market for general web search services in India
(d) Market for non-OS specific mobile web browsers in India
(e) Market for online video hosting platform (OVHP) in India
Further, CCI has also issued cease and desist order against Google asking it to refrain from unfair business practices and directed it to modify its conduct within a defined timeline.
